Especially if you are on a tight budget and can’t afford paid tools, you will find these free tools extremely helpful.
I was searching for kdp keyword generator and came across a couple of very useful amazon keyword tools which I am going to share below.
Before moving to the list of kdp keyword tools, I am going to share with you my process of finding keywords for kdp low-content and medium-content books.
My KDP Keyword Research Process
To find the right keywords for your low-content books you can follow the step-by-step process of finding kdp keywords. The process may feel a bit difficult and time-consuming in the beginning but with practice, it will become much easier and quicker too.
Step 1 – Making a List of Keywords
This is the first step in finding profitable keywords for amazon kdp. You need to make a long list of keywords, as many as you can. To do that you can use some free keyword tools (will share in a moment) and maintain a list inside Google sheets.
Step 2 – Cleaning The List of Keywords
In this 2nd step of kdp keyword research, you can clean the list of keywords. You can remove duplicate keywords, keywords having brand names, and keywords having reference to other book types like ebooks or hardcover books.
Step 3 – Analyzing The Keywords
In this third and final you can analyze your keywords for competition and demand. As you need kdp keywords with fairly high demand but low competition to make sure your books can rank on the first page of amazon.

Amazon KDP Keywords Tools (KDP Keyword Generators)
As mentioned above in this blog post, I am going to share a few free amazon keyword tools that you can also use for finding keywords for your kdp lwo content books. These tools are primarily meant for FBA sellers and can also be used for kdp books.
# 1 – AMAZON KEYWORD TOOL (Keyword Tool Dominator)
This is the very first tool that I recently came across and found it really useful for amazon kdp as well. To access this tool you can to this page: https://www.keywordtooldominator.com/k/amazon-keyword-tool
Here you can enter and keyword or phrase, select the marketplace, and lastly select the amazon department.
For the sake of this blog post, I have entered “composition notebook” as keywords, the United States as a marketplace which is amazon.com, and I have set the department option to Books. You can have a look at the screenshot below;
Based on these filters, the amazon keyword tool is showing me 48 keywords all related to the composition notebook. This amazon keyword tool also shows you some helpful metrics like Top 10 keywords and Score. The higher the score is the more popular the keywords are, in other words, you can decide about the profitability of a keyword based on the Score.
To download some or all of these keywords, you can use the checkbox against keywords columns and then click on the Download Selected Keywords from the right bottom of the keyword list.
You can repeat the above steps by using a variation of the main keyword like you can reverse the original keyword and enter “notebook composition” and hit search. The purpose is to find as many relevant keywords as many you can.
👉 I have also written a blog post about 10 profitable kdp niches for 2023, you can read it here.
# 2 – Keyword Tool For Amazon (Keywordtool.io)
This is the 2nd free keyword tool you can use for amazon kdp low-content books. This tool allows you to find keywords using amazon autocomplete feature. You may already know that amazon auto-complete shows you the most frequently used buyer search terms, so these include high-demand keywords.
With that said, let’s see Keyword Tool for Amazon in action. You can access this amazon keyword tool here: https://keywordtool.io/amazon.
One thing that I really like about this amazon keyword research tool is, it’s simple and user-friendly interface. Just like the previously mentioned amazon keyword tool, this also allows you to use a department filter, and select the amazon marketplace.
For the sake of this post, I am searching for keywords related to “composition notebook” under the books department and in the US marketplace.
As you can see this free version of this tool is not showing us things like search volume, trend, average cpc, and competition, for this info you would have to upgrade. However, we don’t need this info at the moment as we are just making a list of keywords only.
So, you can select all the keywords by using the little check box from the very top-left and then download these keywords as an excel file or simply copy them to clipboard and save them inside Google sheets.
In this way, you should have more keywords to be added to your final list of keywords. Next, you can move on to our third and final free kdp keyword tool.
👉 I have written a detailed blog post mentioning the top reasons why you should switch from low-content books to medium-content books you can read it here.
# 3 – Amazon Keyword Tool (Ahrefs)
This is another free keyword tool for amazon kdp and you can use it to find kdp keywords with high demand. In other words, you can find what people are searching for on amazon and create your low-content books around those keywords.
The cool thing about this amazon keyword tool is it is developed by ahrefs a very famous all-in-one SEO tool for bloggers. It has a very simple and clean user interface and allows you to find most search amazon keywords within different amazon marketplaces.

As I did with the other two amazon keyword tools, I am going to enter my main keyword which is “composition notebook” and I want the keywords data from the US marketplace.
As you can see in the screenshot above, Ahrefs’ amazon keyword tool is showing me a lot of keyword ideas for the composition notebook niche along with an estimated amazon search volume. However, I can only see the first 100 keywords with the free plan, which I think is more than enough for our keyword list.
You can select these keywords and copy-paste them into the excel sheet. In this way, you will have 100 more keywords for your kdp keyword list for composition notebooks.

A. Compiling a List of KDP Keywords
Now we have three different lists of keywords from three different keyword tools. Next, we can compile all these keyword ideas into one single keyword list. For that, you can use Google Sheets which works similarly to ms excel.
Just go to sheets.google.com, log in using your Gmail id, and create a new spreadsheet by clicking the big plus button as shown below;
Now you can rename the spreadsheet and then create four columns including Keywords, Amazon search results, Average BSR, and Keywords Niches Score (KN Score). Additionally, you can add a fifth column of search volume but most of the tools don’t show you this data so you can skip it for now.
Now you can copy and paste keywords that you’ve downloaded from above mentioned amazon keyword tools. The idea is to copy them into a single file and clean them up. I have copied all keywords from three tools and pasted them inside the google sheets and now I have over 200 kdp keyword ideas for the composition notebook.
B. Cleaning and Organizing KDP Keywords
The keywords list we just compiled contains duplicate keywords and these keywords are not organized as well. And most importantly this list may also contain brand keywords that you don’t want to use in your kdp metadata.
So, I am showing you how you can remove duplicates, delete unwanted keywords and organize them alphabetically.
Removing Duplicate Keywords
To remove duplicate keywords from google sheets, you need to select the keywords column and then go to the Data tab. From the popup window click on the Data cleanup and then select Remove duplicates.
Now a popup window will appear where you need to check the box which says Data has a header row, keep the other two boxes checked and click on the Remove duplicates button.
In my case, there are 21 duplicate keywords that got removed and now I am left with 181 unique keywords on my list. Next, you can go through the list and remove any irrelevant keywords as well.
Deleting Irrelevant Keywords
You can clean the list of keywords even further by deleting irrelevant keywords and keywords that have references to any brand. For example, the following are the irrelevant keywords on my list;
- composition notebook 1 pack
- 3 composition notebooks
- 4 composition notebooks
- spiral composition notebook
- mead wide ruled composition notebook (brand keyword)
- leather composition notebook
- composition notebooks bulk
- composition notebook 20 pack
To delete such keywords, you can select the individual row, right-click on it and click delete row. Check out the screenshot below for a better understanding.
Organizing KDP Keywords
This is an optional step, you can arrange the keywords in alphabetical order as well. To do that just select the keywords column and go to the Data tab and from the next popup window click on the very first option, Sort sheet by column A (A to Z).
That’s it now you have a very clean kdp keywords list for composition notebooks. Next, I will quickly show you how to check the profitability and competition for these keywords on Amazon.

B. Analyzing The KDP Keywords
By analyzing the keywords I mean to check these kdp keywords for demand and competition. After all, you don’t want to publish a book with zero demand for it or you also don’t want to publish in a niche where tens of thousands of similar books are already published.
To do that I will be using a free chrome extension by self-publishing titans. This chrome extension is KDP / Amazon BSR & Keyword Research SEO Tool. You can get this extension for free from the chrome store by visiting this link: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/kdp-amazon-bsr-keyword-re/eefljgmhgaidffapnppcmmafobefjece
You can install this extension to your chrome browser and enable it. With this extension enabled, you can take any keyword from your list of keywords and search it on amazon. By doing so, this KDP / Amazon BSR & Keyword Research SEO Tool shows you very helpful data about that keyword including;
- Amazon search results
- No. Books on the first page
- No. of independently published books on the first page
- Average Best Seller Rank (BSR)
- No. of reviews (Average, Low, and High)
- Price (Average, Low and High)
Based on all factors, this extension assigns a Keyword Niche Score to the given keyword which quickly tells you the overall profitability and competition. Ideally, you should be looking for a keyword niche score of over 50 with the following metrics;
- Amazon Search Results ≤ 2,000
- Average BSR ≤ 150 K
- Average Reviews ≤ 2,000
As you can see in the screenshot above the keywords composition notebook is a very competitive one. It has amazon search results of over 39k, an Average Best Seller Rank of 78,297, and a number of average reviews are over 1270.
Based on these factors, this specific keyword has a keyword niche score of 14 which is very low. Basically, the keyword is highly profitable but it is extremely competitive at the same time. You can enter these numbers into your list of keywords for future reference.
In this way, you can search each and every keyword on amazon and note down the keyword niche scores and other data back into google sheets.
Though this process is hard and takes a lot of time but it works. If you want to speed up this process you can use tools like Bookbolt which allows you to not only find profitable kdp keywords and niches but also allows you to create kdp interiors and covers.
