How to Find Profitable Amazon KDP Niches Using AI and Helium 10 (Step-by-Step Guide)
Finding profitable Amazon KDP niches is one of the biggest challenges for new and experienced publishers alike. Most people either rely on guesswork or spend hours searching Amazon without knowing whether a niche is actually worth entering.
Over the last few months, I’ve started using a much faster workflow that combines Helium 10 with ChatGPT to analyze niche opportunities. Instead of looking only at search volume or competition, this process helps me understand what’s actually happening on page one of Amazon and uncover related book ideas I may have otherwise missed.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through the exact process I use.

Why Most Amazon KDP Niche Research Fails
Many publishers make a common mistake.
They find a keyword with decent search volume, see a manageable number of competing products, and immediately start creating a book.
The problem is that those metrics rarely tell the whole story.
For example, a keyword may appear to have low competition but be dominated by books with thousands of reviews. On the other hand, another niche might have more search results but several page-one books with fewer than 30 reviews that are generating excellent monthly sales.
The difference becomes obvious only when you analyze the actual Amazon search results.
The Tools I Use
My workflow uses two Helium 10 tools:
- Magnet for discovering keyword ideas
- Xray for analyzing Amazon search results
I then use ChatGPT to interpret the exported data and identify opportunities that aren’t immediately obvious.

Step 1: Find Broad Niche Ideas with Helium 10 Magnet
I begin with a broad keyword.
Examples include:
- Log book
- Coloring book
- Puzzle book
- Planner
- Journal
Inside Magnet, I apply a few filters to remove weak keywords.
Filters I Use
- Minimum Search Volume: 500
- Maximum Competing Products: 3,000
- Match Type:
- Organic
- Smart Complete
These filters usually reduce thousands of keyword ideas to a much more manageable list.
From there, I sort the results by keyword sales and search volume to identify potential opportunities.
Step 2: Don’t Trust Search Volume Alone
One keyword that initially looked promising was:
Inventory Log Book
At first glance, it appeared to have reasonable competition.
However, after opening the Amazon search results, it became clear that the niche was much more competitive than expected.
This is why I never rely solely on keyword metrics.
Instead, I examine the actual books ranking on page one.
During this process, I noticed another keyword:
Multipurpose Log Book
That became the starting point for a much deeper analysis.
Step 3: Analyze Amazon Results with Helium 10 Xray
Using the Helium 10 Chrome Extension, I ran an Xray analysis on the Amazon search results.
Xray provides valuable information such as:
- Estimated monthly revenue
- Estimated sales
- Best Seller Rank (BSR)
- Review counts
- Price
- Organic rankings
I copied the initial Xray data and asked ChatGPT to evaluate the niche.
The first assessment looked like this:
- Demand: 7/10
- Competition: 8/10
- Revenue Potential: 7/10
- Ease of Entry: 8/10
At this point, the niche looked interestingโbut not necessarily something I would publish immediately.
Step 4: Export the Entire First Page
This is where the workflow becomes much more powerful.
Rather than relying only on summary metrics, I exported the first page of Amazon search results from Xray.
The CSV includes information such as:
- Publisher
- Publication date
- Estimated sales
- Recent purchases
- Book format
- Title length
- Languages
- Review counts
Once I uploaded the CSV into ChatGPT, the analysis became much more detailed.
The Hidden Opportunity AI Discovered
Initially, I assumed I was looking at a niche for “multipurpose log books.”
After reviewing the page-one data, ChatGPT identified something much more interesting.
The best-selling books weren’t really multipurpose log books at all.
They were variations of customizable column log books, including:
- 4-column log books
- 5-column log books
- 6-column log books
- 7-column log books
- 8-column log books
In other words, Amazon customers weren’t searching for one generic product.
They were buying specialized variations of the same successful format.
Green Flags I Look For
Several things stood out during the analysis.
1. Low Review Counts
One of the highest-performing organic books was estimated to generate roughly $5,800+ per month while having only 27 reviews.
That tells me Amazon is still willing to rank newer books.
2. Multiple New Sellers
Several books on page one had:
- 0 reviews
- 1 review
- 2 reviews
- 6 reviews
Yet they were still generating sales.
That’s a positive sign because it suggests the niche isn’t completely dominated by long-established publishers.
3. One Winning Format
Another interesting observation was that one publisher appeared to have discovered a profitable format and expanded it into multiple versions.
Instead of publishing one generic log book, they created:
- Different column layouts
- Multiple cover designs
- Several related variations
That’s exactly how I would approach a promising niche.
Book Ideas AI Suggested
Instead of publishing another generic multipurpose log book, ChatGPT recommended more targeted products.
1. Small Business Income & Expense Log Book
Target audience:
- Small business owners
- Market vendors
- Etsy sellers
- Facebook Marketplace sellers
Suggested sections:
- Date
- Description
- Income
- Expenses
- Profit
- Notes
This was my favorite recommendation because the buyer intent is much stronger than a generic log book.
2. Inventory Tracking Log Book
Ideal for:
- Amazon sellers
- eBay sellers
- Retail shops
- Resellers
Possible interior:
- Item
- SKU
- Quantity In
- Quantity Out
- Balance
- Reorder Point
Inventory tracking solves a specific business problem, making it easier to market.
3. Contractor Job Log Book
Designed for:
- Electricians
- Plumbers
- Contractors
- Handymen
Potential sections include:
- Client
- Job Description
- Materials Used
- Hours Worked
- Amount Due
Again, this focuses on a clearly defined customer instead of trying to appeal to everyone.
Build a Portfolio, Not Just One Book
One of the biggest lessons from this research is that successful publishers rarely stop at one product.
Once they discover a profitable niche, they expand into related books.
For example, after publishing a Small Business Income & Expense Log Book, you could add:
- Inventory Log Book
- Expense Tracker
- Mileage Log
- Order Tracking Log
- Contractor Job Record Book
Instead of relying on one bestseller, you’re building an entire product line around the same audience.
Final Thoughts
Using AI alongside Helium 10 has dramatically improved my KDP research process.
Rather than guessing which niches might work, I can evaluate real Amazon data, identify hidden opportunities, and uncover multiple publishing ideas from a single keyword.
It’s not about replacing your judgment with AI. It’s about using AI to analyze data faster and reveal patterns that are easy to overlook manually.
If you’re serious about Amazon KDP and want to speed up your niche research, I highly recommend trying this workflow yourself.
