Both platforms can help you earn money online, but they work very differently.

What Is Amazon KDP?
Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) allows you to publish a eBooks, paperback books and hardcovers on Amazon.
These can include:
- Notebooks
- Journals
- Coloring books
- Puzzle books
- Workbooks
- And a lot more…
The biggest advantage of Amazon KDP is that Amazon already has millions of customers searching for products every day.
For paperback books and hardcovers: You create the book, upload it, and Amazon handles printing, delivery, and payments.
For eBooks: Amazon instantly delivers you eBook that buyers can read on their kindle device or kindle reader.
Pros of Amazon KDP
- Access to Amazon’s massive audience
- No need to handle customer support
- Low startup costs
- Potential for long-term passive income
Cons of Amazon KDP
- High competition
- Amazon controls the platform
- Lower profit margins
- Little to no customer ownership

Gumroad allows creators to sell digital products directly to customers.
These can include:

Unlike Amazon KDP, you set your own pricing and keep direct access to your customers.
Pros of Gumroad
- Higher profit margins
- Instant product delivery
- Customer email collection
- Full pricing control
- Faster product creation
Cons of Gumroad
- You must generate your own traffic
- No built-in marketplace audience
- Marketing is your responsibility
Which Platform Is Easier?
For complete beginners, Amazon KDP is often easier to start.
Why?
Because Amazon already has buyers.
If you create a useful book and target the right niche, Amazon can send traffic to your listing.
With Gumroad, you usually need traffic from:
- YouTube
- A blog
- Social media
- An email list
Without traffic, even a great digital product may not get noticed.
Which Platform Has More Income Potential?
In my experience, Gumroad has higher earning potential per customer.
A KDP book might earn a few dollars per sale.
A digital product can sell for $10, $20, $50, or more.
You also get access to the customer’s email address, which makes it easier to build long-term relationships and promote future products.
That’s something Amazon KDP doesn’t offer.
My Recommendation
If you’re completely new to online business, start with Amazon KDP.
It teaches valuable skills such as:
- Keyword research
- Product creation
- Market validation
Once you understand those fundamentals, consider adding digital products to your business.
That’s the path I followed.
Today, I use a combination of:
- Amazon KDP
- Digital products
- Affiliate marketing
Rather than relying on a single income stream.
